Baseball season might be over for the Red Sox (ouch) but Boston educators know what's important this time of year.
Setting “Wicked SMAAHRT goals” with your teacher teams.
where I dive into the critically important “H” (heartfelt)
to ensure teachers are invested in their goals.
Many are familiar with the SMART acronym which originated in business in the 80's and became ubiquitous in schools across America when Jan O'Neill and Anne Conzemius brought them to the field of education. (Nice article here if you want a flashback.)
When writing my first bestselling book, The Skillful Team Leader, I noticed that many educators were unintentionally writing what I call:
SEEMINGLY SMART GOALS
Goals that technically meet the criteria of each letter in the SMART acronym,
but are insufficient in guiding teachers toward better outcomes for students.
For instance, the goal might be attainable, but only with unsustainable methods causing burnout or difficulty replicating results.
In a recent webinar based on my newest bestseller Intentional Moves educators asked questions like:
🤔 How do you get teachers to “buy in” to a goal? (My reframe: How do boost investment and ownership of goals?)
🤨 How do we prevent teachers from abandoning important goals when pressing needs arise?
😳 How do I support my team in writing a meaningful goal so we aren't just going through the motions of setting a SMART goal because we were told to do so?
